Celebrate The Return Of Downton Abbey With Upstairs Tea And Downstairs Supper

Downton Abbey: A New Era, Julian Fellowes’ long-awaited second film continuation that follows the sagas of the beloved Crawley family upstairs and downstairs, debuts in theaters on Friday, May 20, and it’s time for pinkies up.

The Langham Huntington, Pasadena is celebrating the upcoming release with a limited afternoon tea series. The hotel has collaborated with Focus Features to offer a tea experience featuring a British-inspired menu of sandwiches like Scottish smoked salmon, truffle egg salad with crispy Iberico ham, and English cucumber and watercress. There will be black currant scones and sweets like sticky toffee pudding.

Attendees are encouraged to dress in period attire and will be offered a theme photo opportunity, as well as a pop-up shop from The Feathered Head, offering custom and authentic vintage hats, fascinators, headbands and accessories.

The Downton Abbey Afternoon Tea  takes place May 15, May 21-22, and May 28-29 in the Lobby Lounge. The First round of seatings is between 11 a.m. and noon,  the second  between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The price is $68 per person, excluding tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and will be available via OpenTable only.

The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook – Gift Set Edition

If you’d rather celebrate at home, The Official Downton Abbey Cookbook – Gift Set Edition includes 100 recipes that showcase the cookery and customs of the Crawley household — from upstairs dinner party centerpieces to downstairs puddings and pies — and includes a giftable apron.  The royal package makes for a great Gemini gift.

Food historian Annie Gray gives insight into the background of the dishes that were popular between 1912 and 1926, when TV series and films are set.

Included in the cookbook is a foreword by Gareth Neame, executive producer and co-creator of Downton Abbey, a special section on hosting Downton-themed dinner parties, notes on the etiquette and customs of the times, stills from the TV series as well as the first film, as well as quotes from the characters.

The recipes are grouped by occasion, which include breakfast; luncheons and suppers; afternoon tea and garden parties; picnics, shoots and race meets; festivities; upstairs dinner; downstairs dinner; downstairs supper and tea; and the still room.

Some recipes in the upstairs menu include Cornish pasties, Chicken Vol-au-Vents and  salmon mousse. Downstairs selections include steak and kidney pie, cauliflower cheese, and gingerbread cake.
