Long Beach School Officer Charged With Murder Of Teen Mom

The Long Beach school police officer who allegedly shot and killed 18-year-old Manuela “Mona” Rodriguez was charged with murder Wednesday.

L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón announced the charge against former school police officer Eddie Gonzalez, 51, who is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.

“We must hold accountable the people we have placed in positions of trust to protect us,” Gascón later said through a press release. “That is especially true for the armed personnel we traditionally have relied upon to guard our children on their way to and from and at school.”

The alleged incident was filmed by onlookers on Sept. 27, as Rodriguez was involved in a fight with a 15-year-old girl near Millikan High School in Long Beach. The video showed what appeared to be an officer reach into a car that Rodriguez had entered after the fight and open fire, allegedly shooting her in the head.

Rodriguez was taken to the hospital and placed on life support before succumbing to her injuries in early October.

“We wanted to let you know that Mona has been taken off of life support after donating her organs to save the life of 5 people,” Mona’s cousin Yessica Loza said through a GoFundMe update.

Shortly after the incident, The Long Beach Police Dept. said it was investigating it as a homicide and Gonzalez was fired from his position in the Long Beach Unified School District.

On the day of the incident, Long Beach PD said it was not involved in the shooting.

Rodriguez is survived by her 5-month-old daughter, mother and four brothers.
