Off-Duty LAPD Detective Shot In Car, Suspect Booked For Attempted Murder


A 14-year-old known gang member was arrested in South L.A. Thursday, in connection to the shooting of an off-duty LAPD detective.

The teen who was taken into custody was in possession of a handgun and was picked up near the area of the shooting on East 28th St. The has since been booked for attempted murder.

LAPD Asst. Chief Robert Marino said the detective was on his way to work when his car door glass shattered. He immediately felt pain in his head and realized he had been shot. The detective was able to drive himself to the Newton Community Police Station, run to the fire station across the street where he received aid. He was then taken to LAC+USC Medical Center where he is in stable condition, as of this writing.

“I’m happy to report that he is in stable condition, he is not seriously injured and that he will be fine,” Marino said in the briefing. “He is currently with his family and his fellow officers.”

Marino added that the detective has an apparent graze wound on his head.

LAPD Robbery-Homicide Detectives are investigating the incident.
