Street Writers, the 1975 “guided tour” book of Chicano graffiti by photographer Gusmano Cesaretti is widely regarded as the first book to explore this culture. For Latin Heritage Month, we delved into the mythic monograph’s history (and spotlit newer books of similar subject matter) and shared a personal connection– our own parents are pictured in the tome. This Saturday, the re-release, published in partnership with Cesaretti and Chris Gutiérrez for Arte Povera Foto Books, gets a proper celebration. The new book is beautiful, with previously unreleased images, a larger hard bound format and protective box cover with title design by Chaz Bojórquez, who was a huge part of the original project.
Cesaretti will be signing copies and Bojórquez will be in attendance as well. Music and poet legend Rubén Funkahuatl Guevara (Ruben and the Jets) will read excerpts from the book and the signing will be followed by an artist reception at Here and Now Cocktail Bar, with a host of DJs including Funkahiatl Guevara (look for the KCET Artbound documentary about his life out soon), Curator (Highland Sounds), Rudo (Highland Sounds/LA Re-Baja MX), SpiÑorita, (NTS Radio), Ganas (Max Exitos/Dublab), Ruben Molina & Soulera 5150, Alfred Hawkins
(Firecracker), Sean Perry (Nocturnal Wonderland) and Dave Salvaje (Cometonocheromantica )
