Music is the song of the soul. It is the bridge that connects us to something eternal, lasting, beautiful, and beyond life, as we know it. It keeps us humble, sane, and altogether at the altar of creation. From the cosmos to terra firma, music is the language of communication and movement. It is deep within us and as deeply outside us too. We are in its lap and it is often on our tongue. As we enter a new era of technology, music-making too has to redefine its charter with the music-maker. James William Awad a.k.a Senior Musician believes that musicians of today need to look at music as a living thing, and not just a process of syncing words and tune.
Senior, who is the founder of TripleOne (111), sees music as an art form that has the ability to evolve with those who are making it. Unlike the sounds in nature, where the elements sound just as they did in time immemorial, the sounds created by man continued to change as time pressed on. For him, ”that’s what real music is about. It’s about creating with the spirit of a lover, a seeker, and not just as someone who is now equipped with technology. That’s the way music will retain its natural element and help us keep our souls alive.”
Technology has been a real blessing to our world. It has allowed us to take our imagination forward by leaps and bounds. Yet, the human mind can be fickle. It can turn a blessing into something of a less savory nature. James William adds, “Technology has made many things possible. It has changed many lives because it has made the process of creation easier. But here’s the tricky bit. The ease of the process takes little away from the pain of creation itself, and musicians of today need to realize that. They need to understand that artists are made after they have walked through the fire of transformation and lived to tell the tale. The tale can then be told with technology but technology cannot be the story itself.”
Senior’s thoughts on music are like music to ears. His encouragement for young musicians to wear their hearts on their sleeves and not become slaves to technology will appeal to anyone who appreciates music that stirs the soul and liberates it.
